PTSD & Trauma

Trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), is often associated with those who have experienced the traumas of war. However, it is important to understand that PTSD has many root causes.

PTSD can develop from any extremely stressful or life-threatening event. These traumas may include, but are not limited to, natural disasters, physical or sexual abuse, sudden death of a loved one or car or plane crashes. These traumatic events can cause impairments in our behaviors and thought processes. Symptoms in adults and children can vary. Symptoms for PTSD in adults include: re-experiencing the traumatic event through flashbacks, nightmares, detachment from personal relationships, an increase in anxiety and emotional arousal, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and hypervigilence. Symptoms of PTSD in children and adolescents include: sleep problems, play in which the trauma is reenacted, separation anxiety from parents and irritability and aggression.

Psychotherapy aids in addressing these maladaptive thoughts and feelings through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. We also offer Family therapy so that proper support may be provided to the individual.
